UK universities are originators of some of the best novel intellectual property ("IP") in the world. IP Group Plc's business is to generate commercial value from IP created by its university partners. IP Group Plc represents a new way of combining the resources of the public and private sectors. From the public sector perspective, UK universities are the recipients of significant public finance - some £3 billion of research funding per annum. This research supports a science base with an enviable reputation. UK scientists produce about 8% of the World's scientific papers and win around 10% of the internationally recognised scientific prizes (including 90 Nobel prizes, the second highest number of any country). Increasingly though, government policy and university strategy is geared towards generating new income streams from the public sector investment in research, and this has led directly to a focus on generating commercial value from university IP.
